All VW Beetles were equipped with a horizontally opposed,
four cylinder engine, commonly referred to as a "flat-four".
In 1955 the Beetle engine had a 1192 cc displacement, which developed
a maximum power of 36 US-hp at 3700 rpm. This engine could propel a Beetle
from 0 to 60 mph in 28 seconds. Although not known for it's power;
this engine proved to be supremely reliable and very easy to maintain.
